This- is Mississauga.
Everyone see the Toronto Star editorial cartoon today?
Makes Parrish look like the aggressor, huh? She wasn't. People need to see the entire Enersource exchange on video to know what's what --it's really one for the books.
[ed. June 23, 2007: Note, I will be posting all 53 minutes of this "exchange" to Google Video and YouTube in another Blog entry.]
It's clear that Parrish is trying to peel back at least some of the secrecy surrounding the Shadowy Secretive Society that Parrish stated The Corporation of Mississauga isn't --an awkward sentence, I know.
The reality is that Parrish's "fault" was that she wasn't being a "cooperative councillor". McCallion demands "cooperative" councillors -- "cooperative" --meaning, "one with The Corporation" as in "Corporation Above All Else".
Yep, the Respectful Workplace Policy Trust Quality Excellence Mayor demands that her councillors be COOPERATIVE.
COOPERATIVE!
Readers here might recall it wasn't that long ago that another hard-working "does her homework" councillor was also dumped on by McCallion for not being "cooperative". Yes, the Port Credit Library Scuffle --March 28, 2007.

I got to hand it to Corbasson how she could swallow McCallion's "The councillor has to have justification" dig --and remain stoic and silent.
COOPERATIVE Councillors
1. Put THE CORPORATION Above All Else.
2. Ask questions privately --not at Council where the public might learn something.
3. Speak to the press about only GOOD MISSISSAUGA spin.
4. Emulate the cooperative councillors, Prentice, Iannicca and especially Mahoney.
And last:
5. Remember The Corporate 3-C's
COOPERATE COOPERATION COOPERATIVE
I decided to draw a cartoon more reflective of What Is. (Plus, I feel sorry for Parrish. She's used to CANADA!)

Speaking of The Corporation's Cooperative Approach --everyone see the June 21st Letter to the Editor in The Mississauga News from Jeff Kay?
June 21, 2007 - Dear Editor:
My wife and I arrived home with groceries recently to find our daughter and a couple of friends playing basketball in our driveway. As a result, we opted to park on the portion of driveway in between the road and the sidewalk rather than cart the groceries in from the road. Not even 20 minutes later the Mississauga Parking Authority came by and slapped a ticket on our windshield right in our driveway.
It was evident that we were both home, yet no request was made for us to pull the vehicle into the driveway another 10 feet. What bothered me most was when we asked why we received a ticket we were told a neighbour had complained and he knew who it was, but couldn't tell us.
We are relatively new to the neighbourhood and our children have made many friends who congregate at our home to play basketball and other games on a regular basis. I am proud to say that I know where my children are at all times and other parents on the street are happy that their children can hang out at our place rather than the mall.
So, I just wanted to publicly thank the kind neighbour who placed the call to the City effectively ending a harmless game of basketball and leaving a big question mark in our minds as to who that neighbour might be. They made us feel really welcome.
And to the city of Mississauga I say maybe the parking control officers shouldn't be driving around in $45,000 vehicles when issuing tickets to honest, tax paying citizens...it just doesn't sit well."
Wait til Mr. Kay finds out those $45,000 vehicles also include wood trim and CD player. And wait til Mr. Kay finds out that what those vehicles don't include is any kind of public complaints procedure.
Anyway, I made a video of Michael Kirkland (architect of the Mississauga Civic Centre) speaking about the Mississauga Civic Centre at the Mississauga Civic Centre Council Chambers. I've been waiting for just the right time to show it.
And well, I'd just like to dedicate "MISSISSAUGA CORPORATE ENVELOPE" to Mr. Kay to make him feel better.

STOP THE PRESSES! JUST NOTICED THIS AT TORSTAR

Memo to the fine citizens of Mississauga:
Finally, there may be reason to attend a city council debate. It seems the stodgy old days of quiet, boring, non-confrontational somnolence are giving way to a new era of real, unrehearsed politics.
Interesting debate may actually break out. Motives might be questioned, political leanings exposed, feathers ruffled, truth exhumed and cross words exchanged. In short, democracy, local democracy in all its beautiful ugliness, may be about to descend on the best-run city in the whole darn universe.
As everyone knows, quiet efficiency is great for the bottom line but lousy for accountability and local democracy. And Mississauga has been nothing if not efficient – quietly so.
"lousy for accountability and local democracy" all right. Good on the Torstar!
Not only might "local democracy in all its beautiful ugliness" break out but who knows? --we might even get traditional media defending and above all, celebrating a "local democracy in all its beautiful ugliness."
And who knows. One year? Maybe even accountability.
Signed,
The Mississauga Muse

I can’t sing and I won’t dance; but, inspired by this latest entry of your blog; I do feel a song coming on. . . .
How about me, you and that Guitar Man fella get together and assemble a little song. I have not got the lyrics or the tune yet but perhaps the working title could be’ ‘Don’t Cry for Me Mississauga’.

Hey there, Steve.
Great meeting you at Wednesday's "Meet The Civic Centre Architect Event".
Love your title, "Don't Cry for Me, Mississauga"
As for lyrics, I wouldn't worry about you not having any. Perhaps we can get the Citizen Duo of Don Barber and Antonio Batista to craft just the right words for "Don't Cry for Me, Mississauga". You know, what with both of them being much more experienced in government-grief than either you or me.
As for me, Steve, if Guitar Man wants me in on this, I can do a wicked Lead Semaphore.
You mentioned "inspired". Got to admit that Torstar article "A new day is dawning in Hazelville" by Royson James inspired me.
James left no doubt the kind of local government he prefers.
"democracy in all its beautiful ugliness"
What's so cool about James' "democracy in all its beautiful ugliness" observation is it echoes Edward R. Murrow's
“We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty,”
"beautiful ugliness" ... LOVE IT.
Signed,
The (I wish I'd penned "beautiful ugliness") Mississauga Muse

If you gals n guys could hum a few bars from versus “ Queen of Denial” 2007/06/21 parts 5d Internal Request for NQI Awards Presentation and parts 5e Recommendation GCB – 3-2007 providing dental coverage not included in the report ( like ages 15 to 65) I’ll bet we could invite get the whole Orphan Annie choir and stage crew just from the original cast from the March 23 2001 Mississauga South referendum.
I could have sworn McGuinty’s NQI was playing the same tunes left over from Carl Defaria’s bowling trophy still in Bev Carpenters piano stool. You know the one in the piano room, next to the water fountains that Batista built, in the church beside the Cawthra Bush that Don Barber built , before Transparency Bill’s 99 and 123 went from Chop Sticks to recent Helter Skelter Property tax increases. I’d be betting Peel would re-unite the entire Orphan Annie casts from the final report just to get their pics up on the Face Book reunion before their Employment Services Group could actually differentiate Natives Skill’s from Emigration skills.
